The subject of geography might bring to mind maps, globes and memorizing the names of mountains and rivers. But geography is as much about people as it is about places.
Alex Colucci teaches human and physical geography at AACC, where students explore the relationship between geography and the environment, and the spatial interactions between people, society, politics and power structures. In a time when our environment is constantly changing, Colucci’s courses can help students think critically about what those changes mean for people around the globe.
Colucci joined AACC’s faculty in fall 2025. He describes AACC students as “inquisitive and curious ... two of the best traits in good students.” He takes a political ecology approach to his teaching with an emphasis on social and environmental justice. In his courses, he especially enjoys sharing how a geographic understanding of the world can be useful to students in the social and natural sciences. He enjoys working on student engaged research projects and his favorite course to teach is Geography of the United States and Canada.
You might spot Colucci on his bike commute to campus or exploring local trails in search of birds as he gets to know Maryland’s environment after moving from Ohio, where he taught geography, environmental studies, and architecture courses at Kent State University. When he’s not exploring the outdoors, he enjoys reading science fiction novels.
