The Anne Arundel Community College board of trustees has awarded trustee emeritus status to James H. Johnson Jr., Ph.D., recognizing his nearly two decades of dedicated service and leadership. The board unanimously approved the honor during its Oct. 14 meeting.

“Dr. Johnson challenged the board to think boldly, act decisively and pursue meaningful, lasting change,” trustee Lawrence Ulvila Jr. said in his recommendation for the designation. “His thoughtful leadership, steady guidance and tireless advocacy have left a lasting impact on the college and community, setting a high standard for future trustees and earned him the admiration and gratitude of his colleagues.”

Appointed to the board in 2006 and reappointed in 2012 and 2018, Johnson served in several key roles, including board chair (2008–2011), vice chair (2007–2008) and member of the Facilities, Board Policy Oversight, Human Resources and Budget committees. He also served as liaison to the AACC Foundation board of trustees and the Maryland Association of Community Colleges.

“Whether navigating complex issues or championing student success, Dr. Johnson led with compassion and purpose,” board chair Nadine Chien, Ph.D., Esq., said. “His influence continues to shape our board, and his wisdom still informs me.”

“Dr. Johnson’s unwavering commitment to AACC has helped shape the college’s vision and values,” AACC President Dawn Lindsay said. “We are deeply grateful for his service and proud to honor him with this well-deserved recognition.”

Beyond his work with AACC, Johnson is a professor emeritus of civil engineering and former dean of Howard University’s College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences. He has served on multiple boards, worked as a technical consultant and written extensively on engineering and hazardous waste management. He is widely respected for his insight, attention to detail and sense of humor.

The AACC board of trustees governs the college and includes nine community members and one student trustee.
