Resident Teacher Program

In partnership with AACC, Anne Arundel County Public Schools offers a Maryland Approved Alternative Preparation Program for teacher licensure for outstanding individuals who do not currently have a professional teaching license but have a sincere desire to enter in the education profession.

Program Overview

In this Resident Teacher (RT) program, you will pursue your teaching credentials through an intensive preparation program consisting of education courses, classroom visits and an internship. Coursework is delivered in different formats (face-to-face and hybrid), while the internship provides “hands-on” training in the teacher’s own classroom under the supervision of a mentor teacher.

License Areas

The program is designed to recruit teachers primarily for critical shortage areas. These areas are middle and high school math, middle school science, biology, chemistry, physics, English, middle school language arts, computer science, family consumer science, technology education, Spanish, French, social studies grades 7-12, early childhood education and elementary education. Upon successful completion of the program, RT educators will receive a Standard Professional License issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Program Requirements

  • Minimum 2.75 college grade point average in undergraduate or graduate degree.
  • Passing scores on a Basic Skills Assessment (Praxis I, Praxis Core or SAT, ACT, GRE or 3.0 GPA from your most recently earned degree).
  • Passing scores on Praxis II/Subject Assessment for the content area.
